La cuarta temporada comienza con el asedio truncado a París y la traición de Rollo, el hermano de Ragnar, que pasa a formar parte de la nobleza franca tras su matrimonio con la princesa Gisla, hija del monarca francés. Además, Ragnar debe hacer frente a enemigos internos y externos que ansían el trono del rey vikingo, cómo por ejemplo Harold Finehair.
